In the top half of the singles bracket, the unchallenged Alex dropped a total of one game en route to the final. On the contrary, the bottom half of the singles bracket saw Ryan play like a punching bag to barely edge past Ariel 6-4, 7-5 who threw kitchen sink after kitchen sink at him with alarming regularity forcing him to call upon all his badminton skill to retrieve ball after ball.

Open singles semi-finalist: Alex Zhang and Arthur Cuenco

Open singles semi-finalist: Ryan Chan and Ariel Liu

In the top half of the doubles bracket, Alex and Ariel overcame the tactically tricky pairing of Marc and Arthur with some youthful exuberance and unbelievable foot speed 6-3, 6-4. The kids will be facing, from the bottom half of the doubles bracket, Ryan and Li who battled into the late hours of the night; coming from a set point down in the quarterfinal over a warrior-like Ava and court position-cognizant Richard only to be forced to come back yet again from 0-5 down in the first set against Rob and Bruce to take the semifinal via an untimely double fault match-point down in three gruelling sets 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

And without further ado, our new double (singles and doubles) crown champion is Alex! Ariel still has her third round singles match to play but is our doubles champion for this 2022!

The day started off with some tricky tactics and excellent doubles featuring Rob and Bruce holding firm despite a barrage the combination of Mark’s lethal forehands and Arthur’s feather touches. Rob and Bruce would not falter however, even saving a set-point in taking the first set 7-5 patiently waiting for errors to creep into their opponents game. With the momentum strongly in their favour, Rob and Bruce would not drop another game to close out the match.

Alex would take on Ryan later in the afternoon for the singles final and it was clear from the opening rallies Ryan would be unable to match Alex in speed or pace. Some shaky service games later, Alex would use his deceptive serve and brutal forehand to break both Ryan’s serve and spirit, steamrolling him over to take the match 6-2, 6-3.

(Mixed) Doubles followed matching patterns in both sets with Li dropping all critical service games as Ariel and Alex seeked for punishing returns. As Ryan and Li had Ariel in their crosshairs, Alex had both his opponents in his crosshairs with opportunistic shots being played not to injure but to kill. Ariel, under immense pressure, after some long rallies, overcame the patient game and played some unbelievable winners from unfathomable court positions to take the match 6-2, 6-2.
